2007 Srila Prabhupada Book Marathon
As a final note for this category for another year, we’d like to finish by saying congratulations to the winners of this year’s marathon in Hungary and the UK:
Everyone who went out was a winner :)
However, two devotees stood out in their efforts: in Hungary, the leader of the All-People’s Liberation movement, Syama-piyari Devi Dasi, zoomed to the lead in the marathon and maintained it right through to the end :) Congratulations!
In the UK–in an upset reminiscent of 1980’s cricket headlines–the reigning king, Prema-rasa Das, was bowled for six by the new Aussie wonderboy, Aprakrt Das. :) Congratulations!

Tamal Krishna Goswami: Srila Prabhupada? The devotees there, they went out on book distribution for twelve hours every day. All the devotees. They went out every day for twelve hours each day. They say, “Thank you for allowing us to assist you in preaching this message of Lord Caitanya in the Western countries. All glories to you, Srila Prabhupada. Your humble servants.” It’s amazing. Seems like Krsna is giving unlimited facilities to spread His glories, Srila Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: Yes. We do not want liberation. We want to serve the purpose of the Gosvamis, in association with pure devotees. To stop birth and death is not our purpose. Tandera carana sevi bhakta-sane vasa / janame janame haya, ei abhilasa: ‘Birth after birth I desire to serve the lotus feet of the acaryas and live in a society of devotees.’”

This will be my last message. You have undertaken a noble effort. All that is left is to finish it in style. Be blessed by Gauranga. Gradually by our book distribution the consciousness of the world is changing. It is a spiritual revolution. The distributed books will have their effect in unforeseeable ways. Those who have participated in this marathon””temple residents and congregation members””have sacrificed so much. I cannot compensate you for that. How could I repay you? I have nothing. Therefore like Krsna I say na paraye ‘ham”¦ “I am unable to repay you. Therefore please let your own glorious deeds be your compensation.” Persons much greater than I, like Srila Prabhupada and Lord Caitanya, are showering their blessings upon you and no doubt you all taste these, the nectarean results of your sankirtana effort. So from the bottom of my heart and with great love again I say “Thank you.” Your servant.

Ez lesz az utolsó üzenetem. Nemes tettet hajtottatok végre. Már csak az van hátra, hogy stílusosan befejezzétek. Áldjon meg benneteket Gauranga! Húsz évvel ezelőtt ilyen idő tájt budai bérelt lakásomban ültem elrejtőzve, és esti programokat tartottam, miközben ezen gondolkodtam: “žBármit is hoz majd a prédikálásom itt, az pluszt jelent Magyarország számára.” Sosem álmodtam arról, hogy a dolgok így alakulnak: sokszáz bhakta, murtik, templomok, farm, fesztiválok, Rathayatra, könyvek, varnasrama, prasadam-osztás, elsőosztályú vezetés, országos elismertség ““ röviden egy növekvő Krisna-tudatos mozgalom ““ és most a 18. sikeresen befejezett Maraton. Magyarország tudata Krisna-tudattá válik. Ez egy lelki forradalom. Úgy gondoltam, kockára teszem a kényelmes helyzetemet Angliában, és vállalok egy kis kockázatot Srila Prabhupadáért. Mindezek a dolgok azért jöttek létre, mert hangsúlyt fektettünk a könyvosztásra. Ez a siker titka. Someone asked how it was that absorption in book distribution is like meditation on Krsna’s eight fold daily pastimes and how book distribution can lead to serving Radha-Syama in Vraja.More… The essence to this answer is to understand that Lord Caitanya is non-different from Radha-Krsna. Thus service to Lord Caitanya by sankirtana is service to Radha-Krsna in the kunjas and meditating on how to distribute books is like meditating on astakaliya.
The difference is that sankirtana-seva is the manifested form of kunja-seva and it is easily available to practicing devotees as well as perfected devotees. When practicing devotees’ hearts are purified by preaching they are fully qualified for meditation on the eightfold pastimes and for Radha-Krsna’s service in Vraja.
The gopis walk through torrential rain at night braving dangerous snakes, all to meet Krsna. Sankirtana devotees distribute in the cold and brave the insults of non-devotees, all to serve Gauranga. There is no difference. The gopis dance and chant by the banks of the Yamuna. We dance and chant in the temple room. No difference. And the gopis serve Radha and Krsna by fanning and singing and we by distributing books and talking about Krsna.
When the gopis bring a new gopi to serve the Divine Couple to increase the sphere of loving exchanges then Krsna asks, “Who is that new gopi?” Sri Radha then answers “She is such-and-such who has been brought here by our dear servant.” Then as a reward, Radha and Krsna cast loving glances at that gopi who recruited the new servant. And that is our preaching. When we distribute a book people read them and enter into Krsna’s family. That is real kunja-seva. Then Gauranga, Radha-Krsna, glance very pleasingly at the preacher, and the collective effect of those glances will be to manifest his or her spiritual form.
That is the connection between book distribution and service to Radha-Syama.
So distribute books, distribute books, distribute books. Only 2 1/2 days left. With each book Radha-Syama cast a glance your way. By one such glance millions of universes are created. What then can be said of the wealth of a preacher?

Amikor a gopik egy új gopit hoznak, hogy szolgálja az Isteni Párt, és ezzel növelje a szerető kapcsolatok szféráját, akkor Krisna azt kérdezi: “žKi ez az új gopi?” Sri Radha pedig így válaszol: “žÅ ez és ez, akit kedves szolgánk h ozott ide.” Majd jutalomképpen Radha és Krisna kedvesen arra a gopira pillantanak, aki az új szolgát hozta. Ez a mi prédikálásunk. Amikor könyveket osztunk, az emberek elolvassák őket, és belépnek Krisna családjába. Ez az igazi kunja-seva. The certificate. Srila Prabhupada once said “I want a certificate from Krsna that this person has done something wonderful for me.” No doubt Srila Prabhupada received such a certificate. This should be our desire as well: do something wonderful for Krsna, be recognized by Him and receive a certificate from Him. What is the best way to serve Krsna? Prabhupada, “Preaching is the best way to serve Krsna”. Then what happens? Prabhupada, “You immediately become recognized by Krsna.” What is the best type of preaching? Prabhupada, “Book distribution is the best kind of kirtana.” We can only imagine with what happiness Krsna recognizes book distributors and we can rest assured that our certificate will quickly follow. I also want such a certificate. And the more books you distribute the more likely I am to get mine. I am greatly indebted for your help thus far. And I will be even more so when I get my certificate.
Here are a few news clips from yesterday’s, Gita-jayanti. Isaak Ildiko went on the street after work for the 2nd day and tasted the nectar. After she remembered not to get in he way a man came up to her and asked for a Gita. Radharani went out with 4 year old Radha-Syama to the Auchan parking lot and they distributed together. Aside from smaller books the little boy distributed a Gita and was so enthusiastic he didn’t want to go home. When Lilarani gave a Gita to man whose family had been to Krishna Valley, he said “This will be my special gift for my wife.” Purusottama sold a Gita to a man who knew of Prabhupada and said “I have heard that he explains each verse very well.” And Sat-nama and Prema-rasa sold 100 Gita’s each. Aprakrita sold 125. These are all acts worthy of Krsna’s recognition and in time a certificate. Make this motto a goal of your life. Keep it in your heart always. After waking and before going to sleep say “I want a certificate from Krsna that this person has done something wonderful for me.”

És minél több könyvet osztotok ki ti, annál valószínűbb, hogy én megkapom az enyém. Nagyon leköteleztetek az eddigi segítségetekkel. És még jobban az adósotok leszek, ha megkapom az oklevelem.

Any way we can distribute our books is good because anyone who reads our KRSNA book, TLC, NOD, and Bhagavad-gita As It Is, is sure to become a Krishna Conscious person. It is a most valuable service to Krishna to distribute these books.

20 Dec: Marathon SMS #25
Today is Gita-jayanti: Krsna and Arjuna are standing on the battlefield and the Lord is delivering eternal transcendental wisdom. To celebrate this day we should try to distribute as many Gitas as possible. And to achieve that we may pray to Arjuna who taught us how to apply transcendental knowledge to fight for Krsna. The essence is: surrender. How to best practice that? Don’t get in the way. Lord Caitanya wants unlimited books distributed and he is doing that through us. If we are not in harmony the Lord, we will get in the way of Him using us as an instrument. If we are in harmony with Him, if we do not get in the way, then wonderful things will happen. It is a matter of consciousness. The story below outlines that.
One day Krsna asked Yudhisthira and Duryodhana to travel the kingdom and determine whether the subjects were good or bad. When Duryodhana returned he reported “All the subjects are wicked” and when Yudhisthira returned he said, “all the subjects are good.” Because Duryodhana was bad he saw the worst in others and because Yudhsithira was good he saw the best in others. It is the same when Krsna send us out on sankirtana. When we are Krsna conscious we will see that everyone is really Krsna’s servant and we need only appeal to their intrinsic good nature and they will take a book and give a donation. And if we are lacking Krsna consciousness then we will only see people’s conditioning, and to engage them in service will be like waging a war.
It is Gita-jayanti. It is “don’t get in the way” day. Let Krsna speak through us to others. Sell them a Gita. Say “Dear Sir. 5000 years ago to this day Krsna spoke this book and today we request everyone to participate in the celebration of that event by taking a book. Sir. Don’t get in the way of this festival. Take the Gita with you.” Today’s mantra is “don’t get in the way,”

Ma van Gita-jayanti: Krisna és Arjuna a csatatéren állnak és az Úr átadja az örök transzcendentális bölcsességet. E nap megünnepléseként próbáljunk meg annyi Gitát kiosztani, amennyit csak lehet. Gita-jayanti van. Ma van a NE ÁLLJUNK AZ ÚTBA nap. Hadd beszéljen Krisna rajtunk keresztül másokhoz. Adjatok el nekik egy Gitát. Monjátok ezt: Kedves uram, 5000 évvel ezelőtt Krisna ezen a napon mondta el ezt a könyvet és ma mindenkit megkérünk, hogy vegyen részt ennek a megünneplésében azzal, hogy elfogad egy könyvet. Uram, ne álljon ennek az ünnepnek az útjába! Vigyen magával egy Gitát! SRS: A mai nap mantrája ez: Ne állj az útba!

Smaranam is performed by fixing the mind on Krsna’s pastimes and chanting Hare Krsna: a meditation and an act of cultivation. As the heart is purified Krsna reveals himself. Our smaranam is not like that of the babajis. Our meditation is the inspirational orders of Srila Prabhupada and our cultivation is the service Prabhupada guides us to, preaching. And in this way Krsna will reveal himself.
These daily messages have been food for smaranam. Today Srila Prabhupada says, “you distribute books, as much as possible”¦” Let us fix our minds on that order, and engage our body accordingly. What will be the result? Again Prabhupada says “If you do this sincerely, it is a fact that Krsna will supply everything else.” What else need we know? Let the babajis chant lakhs of rounds by the side of Radha-kunda for questionable results. By distributing books on the streets of Europe we easily and quickly will attain a guaranteed perfection, “”¦there will be no difficulty”. But we must fix the unruly mind on our meditation and as Prabhupada concludes “”¦remain spiritually strong”. That means chant pure rounds in the morning and between selling books, chant Hare Krsna. This is sankirtana yoga, the yoga for this age.
Today we should also give special appreciation to the devotees engaged in the enormous food distribution marathon that takes place over the holiday season. Jaya!

Ez a sankirtana yoga, ennek a kornak a yogája. Ma különlegesen értékeljük azokat a bhaktákat is, akik a hatalmas ételosztó Maratonban vesznek részt az ünnepek alatt. Jaya!

So you continue this book distribution program very nicely, and at the same time take advantage of these books yourselves. Not that you just distribute but neglect reading them yourself. Always read them, especially Krsna book. Every time you have a spare moment, you should read. This will help you to advance in Krishna consciousness, and will give you the ability to convince others also.

Yesterday’s sankirtana puspanjali was beautiful. Radha Syama looked more gorgeous than ever. They were beaming. When I was sitting before them chanting I thought “All these devotees have offered so many flowers. But what will I offer today? I am doing nothing in comparison to them. What flowers, beside those insignificant ones that grow from the earth can I offer to Radha Syama?” I felt very impoverished.
Then I thought of the long list of names of those devotees who were distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books and I began to offer them as beli, cameli, karnikara, rose, gardenia and lotus flowers; as flower ornaments for Their Lordship’s hands, feet and ears, as crowns for their heads, and as garlands of many colours for their necks. Then I became pacified and happy knowing that I have so many beautiful, aromatic flowers to offer Radha Syama. Flowers that have grown from the soil of pure devotion and that blossom daily with ever fresh offerings of books for the service of Gauranga and the Divine Couple.
Thinking like that I felt very wealthy, richer than the richest king. “I am most opulent!” thought I.

A tegnapi sankirtana puspanjali gyönyörű volt. Radhe Syama bámulatosabb volt, mint valaha. Ragyogtak. Amikor elöttük ülve japáztam, azt gondoltam, hogy mindezek a bhakták annyi virágot ajánlottak fel. De mit fogok én felajánlani ma? Semmit sem csinálok hozzájuk képest. Milyen virágokat ajánlhatok én fel Radha Syamának azokon kívül, amelyek a földből nőnek? Nagyon szegénynek éreztem magam. Aztán azoknak a neveknek a hosszú listájára gondoltam, akik Srila Prabhupada könyveit osztják és elkezdtem felajánlani őket mint beli, cameli, karnikara, rózsa, gardenia és lótusz virágok; mint virág ékszerek az Urak kezére, lábára és fülére, mint korona a fejükre, és mint sokszínű füzérek a nyakuk köré. Aztán megnyugodtam és boldog lettem annak tudatában, hogy oly sok gyönyörű, illatos virágom van, amelyeket felajánlhatok Radha Syamanak. Olyan virágok ezek, amelyek a tiszta odaadás talajából nőttek, s melyek minden nap kinyílnak a könyvek mindig friss felajánlásaival Gauranga és az Isteni Pár szolgálatában. így gondolkodva nagyon gazdagnak éreztem magam, gazdagabbnak a leggazdagabb királynál. Sometimes when I dress Radha Syama I think how nice it would be if all the devotees who are serving Them outside the deity room, could all be inside serving there. Today we will do just that by worshiping Radha-Syama with offerings of flowers, which are books distributed and laksmi collected. We will all be together in Vraja doing personal service to Them. Devotees should first call Radha Syama into their heart to accept the special seat that they have prepared today, a seat made of the jewels of their marathon endeavour to date. They should then place many sweets, savouries and drinks before the Divine Couple which are prepared on fire of sankirtana devotees’ austerities, and which will be Their Lordships’ snacks for today’s excursion. Devotees should then take as their paraphernalia for worship a variety of books, and take the pujari’s vow which is to offer all the items of worship, namely the books in their book bag. Please note that one cannot neglect to offer items to the Lord, meaning all books must be distributed, devotees cannot bring any back. After arriving at their sankirtana spot devotees may offer panamas to the parampara and begin their puja. The puja will be to bathe, dress and ornament Radha Syama with flowers. Bathing takes place in the first part of the day, dressing the second and ornamentation in the third. Flowers are both the books distributed, and the donations received, the size of both indicating the increasingly exotic nature of the flowers offered. For example a Gita may be considered a garland of jasmine flowers. When a book is sold devotees may offer their flowers in the way they prefer saying idam puspam srim-klim-radha-syamabhyam

Néha Radha Syama öltöztetése közben arra gondolok, hogy milyen jó lenne, ha mindazok a bhakták, akik a murti szobán (az oltáron) kívül szolgálják Åket, mind bent szolgálhatnának a murti szobában. Miután megérkeztek a sankitrana helyetekre, ajánlhattok pranamát a paramparának és elkezdhetitek a pujátokat. A puja során megfürdetitek, felöltöztetitek, majd feldíszítitek Radha Syamát virágokkal. A fürdetés a nap első szakaszában történik, az öltöztetés a másodikban, a díszítés pedig a harmadikban. A virág a kiosztott könyvek és a kapott adományok, s ezek mérete jelzi a felajánlott virágok egyre egzotikusabb természetét. A Gitát például tekinthetjük egy jázmin virágfüzérnek. Your reports of book distribution are very, very encouraging. The more you distribute our books and magazines, that is solid work. Krishna consciousness is dormant in everyone and we can awaken it in them. This Krishna consciousness is so nice, the more one works and renders service, the more he becomes enthusiastic. This is the secret of spiritual life. The test of spiritual life is when one can work all day long and not be tired. In the material world, we do a little work and become exhausted. 24 hours we should be engaged in some service to our capacity. That is real spiritual life.

16 Dec: Marathon SMS #21
In my youth I used to swim for the school racing team. Once at a swim meet one of the members of the team took sick, so I had to swim 3 events instead of 2: 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 100m breaststroke. It was a marathon. After the first two events I was tired and racing midway through the third I was dead; my limbs ached and my lungs felt as if they would burst. The discomfort was such that I started to think of stopping and not completing the race. Just at that time, above the noise of the water and the cheering audience I heard a voice shouting “Hajra! Hajra!” It was my father encouraging me. Those words gave me the strength to continue the race to completion.
We are in the final week of the marathon. If you are tired and feel worn out in the race to distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books, then if you listen carefully, above the noise of the cars and anxious people you will hear a voice shouting “Hajra! Hajra!”"”which is short for”””Hare Rama! Hare Rama!” That is the voice of our parampara encouraging you forward, encouragement expressed in the following words of Srila Prabhupada “The books distribution during the six day period [marathon] is transcendental samadhi. They are working in trance, not on the material platform. No common man can work so hard, it is not possible. Your book distribution is really intoxication.” So “Hajra!” everyone. Let us finish the marathon in style.

Fiatal koromban úsztam az iskolánk verseny csapatában. Egy úszótalálkozón az egyik csapat tagunk lebetegedett, s így 3 számban kelett úsznom kettő helyett: 50m mell, 50m freestyle és 100m mell. Maraton volt. Az első két menet után fáradt voltam, a harmadik felénél pedig már hulla; fájtak a végtagjaim és olyan volt, mintha ki akarna durranni a tüdőm. Annyira rosszul voltam, hogy kezdtem azt gondolni, hogy megállok és nem fejezem be a versenyt. Épp ekkor a víz hangja és a szurkoló közönség zaja felett kihallottam egy hangot, ami azt kiabálta, hogy Hajrá! Hajrá! Az apám bátorított. E szavak erőt adtak, hogy befejezzem a versenyt.
Most a Maraton utolsó hetében vagyunk. Ha fáradt vagy és kimerült a Srila Prabhupada könyveit osztó versenyben, akkor ha jól fülelsz, az autók és a nyugtalan emberek zajából kihallhatsz egy hangot, ami azt kiálltja, hogy Hajrá! Hajrá!, ami a Hare Rama! Hare Rama! rövidítése. Ez a paramparánk hangja, bátorítanak, hogy menj tovább, s ezt a bátorítást Srila Prabhupada a következő szavakkal fejezi ki: A könyvosztás a hat napos Maraton alatt transzcendentális samadhi. Transzban dolgoznak, nem az anyagi síkon. Semmilyen közönséges ember sem tud ilyen keményen dolgozni. Lehetetlen. A könyvosztásotok igazán mámorító. SRS: Tehát Hajrá! mindenki. Our Movement is now appreciated all over the world and it is gradually coming to the attention of the important leaders of the present society, so it is incumbent upon us to keep our spiritual strength by rigidly following the regulative principles; then we can deal adequately with all facilities offered by the Lord for expediting His Holy Mission. I am confident that all our sincere intelligent young devotees like your good self will carry this program to fruitful conclusion namely the delivery of the Holy Name to all the fallen souls suffering in varieties of conditional misery and material happiness. Sukadeva Gosvami says “Both by rising and by setting, the sun decreases the duration of life of everyone except one who utilizes the time by discussing topics of the all-good Personality of Godhead.”
Materialistic people are squandering their valuable human form of life. Day by day they approach a death that is but the gateway to lower species of life. Vaisnavas, by contrast, perfectly utilize their lives by serving the Lord and thus approach the goal of life: going back to Godhead. This book distribution and donation collection ensures that glorious future for us. More than that, it gives those we meet a foothold on the right path and a chance to share our good fortune.
Let us never forget how fortunate we really are. When you meet people today do this: Point to the sun (if it is visible) and say, “The sun is robbing you of your life. What are you doing about that? Take this book! It will make today the most important day of your life. Today you can set foot on the path of deathlessness. Give a donation! Ancient scriptures guarantee that any amount given to us will be returned to you unlimited fold. So give the most you can for in this way you will get temporal and eternal benefit.”
Engaging ourselves by such charitable works, sankirtana, is like, indeed it is, kirtana of the holy name. How fortunate we are! Let us be careful Maya does not make us forget our good fortune.

Srila Prabhupada Says…
Prabhupada: Then you are dictated by the public, not by the dictation of your spiritual master. Spiritual master has ordered to distribute books; you shall do that. That is obedience. Now the public may take or not take, that is public’s option. But my duty is — because spiritual master has said — I must try my best. Spiritual master has not said that “You must sell so many books daily, otherwise I will reject you.” He has not said that. So everyone may try his best, that’s all. The public may take or not take, it doesn’t matter. And if you are, want to please the public, public says that “You dance naked, I will be very happy with you, I’ll give you (indistinct).” So I’ll have to do that. Then what is the use of making a spiritual master? Public, they have got their whims, how to become pleased. So we are to follow all these things? We have to follow our instruction of the spiritual master. That is… (indistinct) Why to manufacture “The public will be pleased like this”? Public may or may not give you, what you can do?
Hari-sauri: Our success is in the spiritual master’s pleasure, not the public’s pleasure.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is bhakti. Otherwise why Krsna says, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]? “You haven’t got to please so many religious instructions. You simply please Me.”
